Cool Blue

Some short films suffer because they are all pay-off and no story, or because the supposed sting in the tail lacks punch. Thankfully this well-rounded little short - penned with some style by Andrew Newall - has both a tale to tell and that little bit of something extra.

A man (Joe Pieraccini) walks into a car park at night, looking for something. He spots it, the perfect car - and it isn't long before he's trying to jimmy the lock. But will he arouse the suspicions of someone else?

To tell you too much about the plot would ruin what is a decent surprise - and if you go to the website below to watch it online, I recommend you don't read director Mark Boggis's one-line description before settling to watch the film, since he rather tips his hand.

Thankfully, when it comes to directing, he's much more subtle, using clever point of view shots, mixed with nice close ups to ratchett up tension and carry you along with the characters. There is no dialogue - a clever trick which adds to the atmosphere - and sound and music are used to good effect. The film is almost as stylish as the car our man is trying to nick.
